Ajin(“Demi Humans”) Info!

Hot on the heels of the CG animated films is the live action remake of Gamon Sakurai’s hit manga Ajin. Ajin or “demi humans” are people who cannot die, treated with suspicion and controlled by governments of the world as freaks of nature. Kei Nagai is instantly resurrected as an Ajin when he’s in a hit and run accident, and finds himself caught in the middle of a massive government conspiracy and a brutal rebellion l by the elusive Ajin known only as Mr. Satô. While some apparent changes have been made from the original story, most notably, Satô has been aged down and Nagai has been aged up, the trailer certainly reflects the frenzied action and rampant violence of the manga.

The story is about a student named Kei Nagai (永井 圭 Nagai Kei), who discovers he is an immortal “Ajin” when he is hit by a truck. While the government claims to help Ajin live in a safe environment, they are actually using them as subjects for cruel and inhumane experimentation. As a result, Ajins that have escaped are bent on revenge with the exception of Kei who wants no part in the Ajin conflict. Kei is initially shown to lack empathy for others, even the people closest to him, but as Sato’s actions become even more extreme, he eventually joins the fight to stop Sato’s violent campaign.

IT is an 1991 TV mini series adaptation of Stephen King’s IT amassed a cult following, and Tim Curry’s original performance as the town-terrorizing clown pennywise has set a high bar for anyone to following the role, So when director Andy Muschietti revealed his new version of the character, now played by by Bill Skarsgard, in  a costumer that could’ve easily been borrowed from a schoolgirl’s dress, it’s only natural that he faced a little blowback. It is intended to be the first installment in a planned duology, as well as being the second adaptation following Tommy Lee Wallace’s 1990 miniseries. The film tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine, who are terrorized by the eponymous being, only to face their own personal demons in the process.

The film has been described as a loss of innocence film, with fear, mortality and survivalist themes. Muschietti remarked of the film’s elements of coming of age and issues of mortality, wherein he states such themes are prevalent in King’s book, though that in reality these occur in a more progressive way,

“There’s a passage [in It] that reads, ‘Being a kid is learning how to live and being an adult is learning how to die. There’s a bit of a metaphor of that and it just happens in a very brutal way, of course.”

He also mentioned the characterization Pennywise’s survivalist attitude, and a passage in the novel, which inspired Muschietti was when Bill wonders if Pennywise is eating children simply because that’s what we’re told monsters do, in stating,

“It’s a tiny bit of information, but that sticks with you so much. Maybe it is real as long as children believe in it. And in a way, Pennywise’s character is motivated by survival. In order to be alive in the imagination of children, he has to keep killing.”

Release Date:

It is scheduled to be released in North America on September 8, 2017. On March 7, 2017, the title of the film was announced by Stephen King as Part 1 – The Losers’ Club or IT.
